What should I do next? That’s what I was thinking after I graduated from college.
I finished in four years. I didn’t think that would happen. But it did.
I read about 17 books during the summer. I didn’t think I could do that, but I did.
I was working at a Gold’s Gym. I enjoyed it. I was the manager. No wait, the assistant manager. Wait, who knows what I was. I had a title but so did someone else. As the days progressed, I knew it was time for a change. But what?
I thought about graduate school. But I was tired and not interested.
My answer was given to me. But from an unlikely source. It came from one of the members at the gym. I feel terrible that I can’t remember his name. I’m sorry. But he asked me one question.
Guy: What is it that you want to do?
Me: I don’t know.
Guy: Let’s get some coffee together so we can talk.
Me: Okay sounds good, thanks.
One question. One invite. One acceptance.
BOOM. My life was changed. But I didn’t immediately know it.
Eventually, I would. I would learn the importance of accepting invitations no matter how small or insignificant they may have appeared. I could have said “No” thinking that is was a waste of time. But I didn’t. Thank you, Lord.
This man introduced me to the world of Pharmaceutical Sales. Pharma what? But I would soon learn. I would leave Gold’s Gym in a few months and begin a great career with Pfizer Inc. I went from selling gym memberships to selling billion dollar products. I never thought I could do that. But praise God I could and I did.
I needed help along the way. God was with me. Family assisted me (like buying a new kitchen table for my apartment). Others like this guy helped me. And I helped myself by saying “Yes”. I kept an open mind.
The moral of the story?
- Accept that invitation. It may be the answer to your prayers. It may open a door you haven’t considered.
- You will need help along the way. Take it. Put pride aside and tell your ego to go.
- Look for opportunities to reciprocate the same to others. Maybe you are the one who needs to invite someone for coffee, make a book recommendation, or something else. There’s enough to go around so we all can be winners.
- Walk through that door. It will lead to greater things.

I CAN DO…SO CAN YOU.
